This is a review of Yusransah’s thesis EFL Textbook Evaluation in School-Based Curriculum Content (2008).
On the abstract the writer had used more than 200 words to describe what his thesis all about. He succeeded in explaining the aim of the study and followed by the description on how the data analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. It suggests me that the writer tries to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the textbook used in a classroom. What makes the abstract longer, he uses the page to explain what good books look like which is better written later in the literature review. He also will save more spaces if he omits the explanation about his assumption on teachers’ perception towards books.
The writer states on the background his own rich experiences that have triggered him to do the research on the textbook used in the classroom. However, he does not elaborate much about his own experiences in making teaching materials. He writes more on reasons why published materials have more credibility than teacher-generated materials. The writer seems to agree that teachers do not have sufficient competence to create teaching materials. Whereas Permendiknas No. 41 Th. 2007 suggests that teachers are advisable to plan, to present and evaluate teaching materials in scope of school level where they dedicate their work independently.
The writer has declared the research purpose clearly. It has three things to be sought: (1) find the strength and weakness of the textbook, (2) find teachers’ perception toward the textbook and (3) investigate the difficulties faced by teachers in using the textbook. To me, after reading the third objective, there is a question emerge. I wonder why he is only interested in difficulties faced by teachers in using the textbook. In my opinion the real user of the textbook is students. So it will informative and worth doing if he tries to find out what obstacles faced by students when they use the textbook suggested. This is in line with the writer’s scope of study; he decides to investigate the textbook as a product not as source of material. It means that the writer investigate inappropriate consumer of the product. When the book is regarded as a product, then the students are the consumers. In elaborating the significance of the study, it suggests me that the writer has fixed intention to aim that his work will be dedicated to improve EFL teaching quality.
Finally, he writes the clarification of terms to keep the study on its track. I can say that this chapter is remarkable because it does not make the reader wander around the bush.
